Public Integrity Symposium Call for Papers: Submission Deadline July 30, 2011

 C A L L   F O R    P A P E R S
Public Integrity
Symposium
“Gender and Ethics”

Ethical issues pertaining to gender are a palpable undercurrent in our society that at times wells up to capture the attention of the public on a grand scale. The annual comparisons of gender income disparity, reports on the global trade in sexual slavery, policies on same-sex marriage and partner benefits are just a few of the many issues we confront daily. These are topics that engender high levels of emotion yet are rarely analyzed from the perspective of applied ethical theory. Dissecting the ethical components, examining the scope of the topics and their impact on individuals and society, and offering models for resolving the issues are essential steps in resolving the problems.
This refereed symposium proposes to consider these questions at length and from a variety of perspectives: policy, law, social sciences, global studies, and economics. Proposals for this symposium can take the form of research articles, commentaries, field reports, cases, or book reviews. Topics authors might consider include but are not limited to:
· The Ethics of Gender Disparities in Law, Politics, and Society
· Women, Ethics, Leadership, and Power in Organizations
· The Comparative Ethics of Disparate Gender Treatment Globally
· The Ethics of Gender-Based Economic Disparity
· The Ethical Implications Of Gender Portrayal In Communication and the Media
· The Ethics of Objectification: Advertising, Fine Arts, and the Internet
· The Female As Sex Symbol and the Sexualization of Pre-Teens
· Sexual Slavery: Law, Politics, and Societal Impact
· Same-Sex Partnership and Gender Identity Discrimination
The guest editors of this symposium are Carole L. Jurkiewicz, Louisiana State University (cljrkwcz@lsu.edu), Frances Burke, Integrity International (integrityintal@yahoo.com), and Karin M. Lasthuizen, VU University (k.m.lasthuizen@vu.nl). Please submit proposals for the symposium to cljrkwcz@lsu.edu by 30 July 2011. Proposals should include the working title and a brief abstract of the manuscript, along with full contact information and affiliation. Selected authors will be determined by mid-August with full papers due 15 January; revisions will be due 15 April 2012.

13th Interntional Winelands Conference 2012 Call for Papers; Submission Deadline October 15, 2011

13th International Winelands Conference 2012
April 2-4, 2012

Conference themes:
Integrity and governance: What is wrong? What is good? What is next?
Theme 1: What’s wrong?  Corruption in Governance
Theme 2: What’s good? Good Governance in the public and non-profit sector.
Theme 3: What’s next? Innovations in Governance and Research.

CONFERENCE WEBSITE: http://www.winelands2012.co.za/

The School of Public Leadership (SPL) of Stellenbosch University, South Africa in collaboration with  the Anti-corruption Education and Research Centre (ACCERUS) Stellenbosch, South Africa and the Zijlstra Center for Public Control and Governance, VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands is pleased to announce the 13th International Winelands Conference – “Integrity and governance: What is wrong? What is good? What is next?” and to invite the submission of papers for this prestigious event which will be held over three days beginning on Monday, 2 April 2012.

This 13th biennial Conference, now in its twenty-fourth year, will once again be held in historic Stellenbosch, the university town with scenic oak-lined streets, elegant old architecture, a wonderful climate, magnificent tourist destinations and, of course, the world-famous wine estates, from which the Conference takes its name.

The Winelands conference, with its essentially public leadership and governance focus, is held every second year in Stellenbosch in South Africa’s Western Cape province. The Conference always attracts an accomplished range of international participants – not least because of its stimulating and collegiate ambiance.

The 13th Winelands Conference proposes to address the contribution of various research disciplines towards solving particular social and administrative problems. To this end the Conference will focus on three inter-related themes.

The first theme : “What’s wrong?  Corruption in Governance” wishes to explore the pervasive nature of corruption and the problematic administrative and social effects it has regarding state organisations around the world. Why are countries individually and collectively failing to deal effectively with the problem? Is it that we have yet to accumulate sufficient knowledge on the causes of corruption and on approaches that would most effectively combat it?  What new perspectives, ideas and concepts might there be – both theoretical and practical – that attempt to address these questions?

The second theme “What’s good? Good Governance in the public and non-profit sector” concerns the new concepts of governance now found in many countries around the world. “Network governance”, “publicness” and “civilness” are but some of the new terms being used to describe steering mechanisms and structures which concern both the public and private sectors. These all tend to have a perplexing degree of complexity and ambiguity. How should we properly understand and utilise these approaches to modern governance? Which of these have the potential to significantly improve levels of good governance – and have been seen to be effective? And what should be the role of government in exploring, promoting and applying these new concepts?

The third and final theme “What’s next? Innovations in governance and research” which concerns innovation in governance, seeks to take a more in-depth look at the international research community’s response to social problems. How do we go about obtaining deeper and more comprehensive understandings of new challenges in the public sector? What new perspectives might we pursue in order to deal with these powerful and resilient problem areas? And relatedly there is also the issue of new research approaches: what focus and methods of research might best contribute to the answers we seek? Are there possibilities for action research, trans-disciplinary projects – or are there perhaps altogether new research methodologies that might be useful?

We invite you to submit your abstract by 15 October 2011 and take part in this exciting congress!

CONFERENCE WEBSITE: http://www.winelands2012.co.za/

We look forward to welcome you in Stellenbosch.

Conference on Design Principles and Practices, Los Angeles, January 20-22, 2012; Call for Papers Submission Deadline July 7, 2011

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the international Advisory Board, I would like to inform you of the:

SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES
University of California, Los Angeles, USA
20-22 January 2012
http://DesignPrinciplesandPractices.com/Conference

We are pleased to host the Design Conference this year at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA.  Los Angeles is a world center of entertainment, arts, design and media. Its cultural and economic diversity, and landmarks of expansion and development over the last century make Los Angeles an ideal place to discuss the dimensions of design theory and practice.

The Design Conference is a place to explore the meaning and purpose of ‘design’, as well as speaking in grounded ways about the task of design and the use of designed artifacts and processes. The conference is a cross-disciplinary forum that brings together researchers, teachers and practitioners to discuss the nature and future of design. In professional and disciplinary terms, the conference traverses a broad sweep to construct a dialogue that encompasses an expansive array of disciplinary perspectives and practices. The highly inclusive format provides conference delegates with significant opportunities to connect with people from shared fields and disciplines and with those from vastly different specializations. The resulting conversations provide ample occasions for mutual learning, weaving between the theoretical and the empirical, research and application, and market pragmatics and social idealism.

As well as an international line-up of plenary speakers, the conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the refereed ‘Design Principles and Practices: An International Journal’. If you are unable to attend the conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication, as well as access to the journal.

Whether you are a virtual or in-person presenter at this conference, we also encourage you to present on the Design Conference YouTube Playlist. Please select the Online Sessions link on the conference website for further details.  We also invite you to subscribe to our monthly email newsletter, and subscribe to our Facebook, RSS, or Twitter feeds at http://DesignPrinciplesandPractices.com/.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 7 July 2011. Future deadlines will be announced on the conference website after this date.  Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Full details of the conference, including an online proposal submission form, are to be found at the conference website – http://DesignPrinciplesandPractices.com/Conference/.

We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope you will be able to join us in Los Angeles in 2012.
